I’m Mike Hamilton, the Director of IT for MuleSoft, and I am very excited to be kicking off a series of blog posts talking about how we use MuleSoft technology here at MuleSoft.
At MuleSoft our approach to IT involves blending our work and talent into the fabric of the business. We are continually looking for opportunities to use our technical experience to solve or enhance business processes and in turn make MuleSoft and our fellow Muleys successful. This creates exciting opportunities to better understand processes that drive our business and to build strong working relationships across teams.
I find it particularly exciting to be in an company where this approach to IT is encouraged. What is even more exciting is that my team has access to the amazing technology that is the Anypoint Platform. Because I work in a tech company, I have access to some great minds and you might assume that my team is heavily loaded with developers. This is not the case – my team has all the traditional skill sets IT requires – systems, network, desktop, etc. These skills are and continue to be vital to our company, but how do we as IT provide more value to MuleSoft? How can we leverage our technology and company philosophy to drive the practical implementation of new approaches to solving business challenges?
We are building integrations to help us manage data governance issues across some of our key systems of record, something you would probably expect us to be doing.
MuleSoft has been experiencing rapid growth as a company and with this growth comes increased demand for better processes. MuleSoft IT is working on two fronts to address these needs right now with the Anypoint Platform. We are building integrations to help us manage data governance issues across some of our key systems of record, something you would probably expect us to be doing. And we are building internal APIs that connect our business in new ways, which is exciting for me and my team.
It would be easy for most enterprises to assume that developing APIsaround their business is a practice reserved for the Amazons and Googles of the world. You may have read the famous API email from Jeff Bezos to his employees about APIs within the company and thought to yourself, “Sure, that sounds great – but that doesn’t seem possible in my company.”.
At MuleSoft, we have built our technology around bringing APIs to the enterprise and, importantly, bringing the benefits of APIs to companies that don’t staff dozens of developers. It would be easy for most enterprises to assume that their business challenges are too different from companies leveraging APIs internally and therefore the idea seems difficult to apply. You could assume that the incumbent back-end systems that you use are just not equipped for APIs in your business. In both cases, that assumption shouldn’t hold you back.
Building APIs around your business, whether the APIs are consumed internally or externally, brings many tangible benefits. In IT at MuleSoft we are mapping the application of APIs to processes within our business to help us gain the benefits of this approach. We are looking at how our processes interact with ERP, CRM, HRS, and other systems and finding opportunities to build APIs for those requirements.
I’m excited to use this blog as a forum to talk more about what we are doing here in IT at MuleSoft as a way of sharing how we use our technology to improve our business process. In my next post I’ll be talking about how we view systems of record in relation to business process and how our own APIs apply to make more flexible use of those technologies.
